John MacDonald was born on January 11, 1815, in Glasgow, Scotland, and came to Canada five years later. A witty and well-spoken lawyer, he made a reputation of defending unpopular cases. He was the chief architect of the union of Canada, and became its first Prime Minister in 1867.
