John Abbott was born on March 12, 1821, in St. Andrews, Lower Canada (now Quebec). He became the dean of McGill's law school in 1855, and was elected mayor of Montreal in 1887. He was closely involved with the construction of the Canadian Pacific Railway, and he became Canada's first natively born prime minister in 1891.
