A great way to make inside days more exciting is to have some fun with science! Did you know you have everything you need to act like a scientist right in your box of art supplies and in your kitchen cabinets?

  • 1.

    Start with a cup of water and some unwrapped Crayola Crayons. Make a hypothesis: Will the crayon sink or float in the cup of water?

    Add salt to another cup of water. Stir. Make a hypothesis: Will the crayons sink or swim in salt water?

  • 3.

    Add sugar to another cup of water. Stir. Make a hypothesis: Will the crayons will sink or swim in sugar water?

  • 4.

    What other mixtures could you try? What about adding cooking oil or dish soap to a cup of water? Will crayons float in these mixtures?

    What about crayon shavings? Sharpen some crayons with the crayon sharpener on the back of your box of 64 Crayola Crayons. Will crayon shavings float in each of these liquids?

    Keep exploring. Ask yourself lots of questions, like "What will happen?", "What were the results?", "What do I see?" and "What do I wonder about?"
