Flip! Toss! Shake! Swing! What’s your trick for catching the ball in the cup? Make (and take) this game along to play with friends wherever you go!

  • 1.

    Do you ever think about what life is like without video games or TV? Kids make their own toys. Variations of this Cup and Ball game are found around the world. It’s a real challenge to catch the attached ball in the hole!

    Make the ball. Mix color from a Crayola Washable Marker into a small ball of white Crayola Model Magic compound. Knead to get a color you like. Form the ball around the end of a length of yarn. Air-dry the ball overnight. For extra strength, glue yarn in place. Air-dry the glue.

    Create a catcher. Cut a cardboard triangle. Ask an adult to help cut a center hole that’s just the right size to hold the ball. Decorate both sides of your triangle. Punch a hole along the edge and tie the ball to it.

  • 4.

    Play! Hold the triangle in your hand. Swing the ball to catch it. Experiment with different sizes of balls, triangles, holes, and lengths of yarn. Invent techniques for tossing the ball. What works best for you and your friends?
