Born on January 28, 1822, in Scotland, Alexander Mackenzie came to Canada at the age of 20. He was the editor of the Lambton Shield, a crusading reform newspaper, from 1852 to 1854. He became Prime Minister in 1873 after the defeat of John MacDonald, and was responsible for the creation of the North-West Mounted Police.
