On January 9, 1793, Jean-Perrre Francois Blanchard made the first manned balloon flight in American history. The event occurred in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and was watched by President George Washington. The hydrogen-filled balloon rose to a height of 5,800 feet and traveled 15 miles. It landed 46 minutes later in New Jersey. Blanchard had one passenger with him on the flight, a little, black dog!
