Louis St. Laurent was born on February 1, 1882, in Compton, Quebec. He joined William King's cabinet in 1941, and acted as prime minister whenever King was traveling. He was one of the original advocates of the North Atlantic Pact, and he was elected prime minister in 1948. He oversaw the building of the St. Lawrence seaway and the beginnings of the Trans-Canada Highway.
