Lester Pearson worked as a Canadian diplomat for 20 years before becoming prime minister in 1963. In 1957, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts in ending the fighting in Egypt over control of the Suez Canal. It was Pearson who proposed the maple leaf-adorned flag of Canada, which flew over Parliament Hill for the first time on Feb. 15, 1965.
